You need to give extra thought to safety when choosing
replacement
windows, if you have kids or an elderly person
living in the house. In all cases you need to insist
on safety glass in doors and low level glazing applications.
You can use laminated or toughened glass - Laminated
glass is, as its name implies, made of layers of glass
laminated together with plastic film which keeps it
more or less in one piece even after it's broken -
it's safe and has the bonus of added security. Toughened
glass is much stronger than ordinary glass and when
it breaks, it shatters into small pieces which are
less likely to cause personal injury.
Ensure you plan your escape - Ensure you have enough
fully opening windows to let everyone escape in the
event of a fire or hazard. You might want to get onto
the garage roof or jump onto the lawn in the event
the stairs are alight and unless you keep a large
hammer under the bed, you'll find it very hard to
break the glass...
