Double Glazing - Window Replacement - Double Glazing Faqs
Do I require planning permission for my conservatory?
You will usually not require planning permission in England and Wales. This is providing you do not exceed the permitted limit of development for your property (which is 50-70 cubic metres, depending where you live). Exceptions to the above are listed buildings and conservation areas. If your property has been extended in the past, you will have used up some or perhaps all of your "permitted limit of development" and may need permission.
It is also worth adding that occasionally "permitted limit of development" rights may be withdrawn from a property and any extension however small needs planning. Ifyou are in any doubt please ensure that you check with your local council.
I have just had double glazing fitted and I am not happy with the results. What can I do?
The first thing is to raise the matter with the installer. Ensure that you check the work before signing or paying for it. This is the best time to get any problems rectified while the installer is still onsite and is waiting for you to approve the work. Do not sign any paper work/contractt or make a full payment untill you are entirely happy with the work that has been carrried out by the double glazing comapny.
If it is not possible to resolve the matter straight away or the problem develops later on, you should phone the double glazing company immediately. Explain exactly what the problem is and ask how and when the double glazing company intends to have the work rectified. Also, keep a record of any phone calls and record who you have spoken to and what exactly was said. Keep copies of all contracts, invoices and letters. If you are not happy with the double glazing companies response, then ask to speak to the companies manager/owner.
If you are still not happy, write to the company, address the letter to the manager/owner and ensure that you state exactly what the problem is and what you want done to rectify it. Do not get angry or abusive, outline the facts and say that you will allow period of time (14 days is recommended) for the double glazing company to respond and/or rectify the problem.
If you do not obtain a response from this, then we suggest you either contact the trade association if the double glazing company is a member and/or consider legal action. Many solicitors will now give either a free or fixed fee first consultation and will write a suitably threatening letter for a reasonable price.
